With 50,000 savers and 7,000 borrowers, Hinckley & Rugby chose Esteem to simplify and manage its IT Infrastructure

Formed from the merger of two separate institutions and first established in the mid-1800s, Hinckley & Rugby Building Society is an established, long-standing society in the Leicestershire and Midlands region.  With thousands of customers to service on a daily basis and even greater numbers of sensitive data records, it is vital for Hinckley & Rugby's IT services to remain performant and secure, complying with FCA and PRA requirements. 

The Challenge 

Prior to approaching Esteem, the Society determined that its IT infrastructure was out-of-date and in need of a refresh, with the business still running on Windows Server 2003.  Unable to cope with the demands of its success, the Society's small IT team spent the majority of their time 'keeping the lights on' dealing with server and desktop issues.

Having outlined its requirements, Hinckley & Rugby approached Esteem with the objective of future-proofing its IT infrastructure, increasing operational efficiency whilst reducing physical server footprint and costs.

The Solution

After a thorough and transparent assessment of the market, Esteem put forward Nutanix to replace and virtualise the Society's current storage architecture.  Combining feature-rich, software-defined storage with built-in virtualisation, Nutanix is a hyperconverged infrastructure solution designed to run any application at any scale.  By combining storage, network and compute within a single appliance, Nutanix enabled the Society to not only reduce its infrastructure footprint from twenty servers to three, but also to increase performance and service levels.  The solution also included the implementation of Citrix NetScaler and a Windows Active Directory upgrade which, united with Nutanix, dramatically improved end-user experience and productivity levels.

Due to the size of Hinckley & Rugby's IT team, Esteem also provided a managed service to complement the team and provide extra peace of mind.

The Results 

Working with Esteem, Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has successfully achieved its key objectives with an agile and scaleable IT infrastructure, supporting its business growth.

A simple example of success is shown in the login times reported by Hinckley & Rugby.  Prior to the solution, the Society reported login times to Citrix as 2-5 minutes, whereas with the new Nutanix-Citrix solution in place, login times have been reduced to just 20 seconds.

Looking to the future, Nutanix combined with Esteem's Managed Services offer the valuable prospect of a simple and cost-effective upgrade pathway should the Society need to scale up or out in the future.
