Partnering with Esteem, Leeds Teaching Hospitals has heavily invested in and upgraded their whole IT infrastructure, including implementing Active Directory and delivering Windows 7 across their 10,000 users.
I’m Eileen Jessop. I work for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and I am a deputy director of the informatics service. We have about 10,000 desktops across the organisation and about a further 1,000 to 1,500 laptops. The Leeds infrastructure has not been invested in in many years, so it’s a fairly ageing infrastructure and over the past few years we’ve been doing an awful lot of work with a number of organisations, including Esteem, to start to upgrade that infrastructure. Esteem were successful three years ago with a bid to implement active directory across the organisation and because that project was so successful, we’ve used them to work with us on Windows 7, and they were subsequently successful in winning a major bid in December of last year to implement storage across the organisation.
The reason for choosing Esteem in Leeds was they came up with some of the best solutions, they understood the organisation and they worked very closely with Leeds as an IT partner. Working with Esteem has solved a number of IT challenges for the organisation: the end of support agreement from Microsoft for XP, and the fact that the organisation wanted to move away from Novell directories. Both of these have been achieved through working with Esteem, but they've also helped us by meeting a challenge around storage and implementing storage at a rapid pace for the organisation and we’re really pleased with the support we’ve been given.
What I value about working with Esteem is that they work closely with the organisation as a partner, they understand the challenges that are faced by the organisation and by the NHS as a whole and that’s the real appeal of working with a good IT partner.
I view Esteem as specialists in the health IT industry because they have quite a good relationship with many health organisations, they have made it their business to understand healthcare and the challenges in healthcare at the moment and that’s what’s really important about working with a company like that - that they do understand your business as well as you do.
I’d recommend other NHS trusts to work with Esteem because they’ve worked with one of the largest in the country - Leeds - you can’t get more complicated and difficult an organisation as the Leeds Teaching Trust. It’s not been an easy project for Esteem in Leeds, no project for any clinical or IT systems provider has been easy in Leeds, so if you can crack Leeds, you can crack anywhere in the NHS.
