Powys Expands Email Access And Drives Down Total Cost Of Ownership
12th February 2003
Powys County Council has awarded one of the UK's leading IT infrastructure solution providers Esteem Systems a contract to install new Sun hardware and software as part of an IT infrastructure project to give 2,000 users across multiple sites access to directory services, email and calendar facilities. The new infrastructure uses Sun's Open Net Environment (ONE) architecture, which will reduce the total cost of IT ownership at the Council and improve accessibility to core services.
Powys Council has sites in Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and Welshpool and is responsible for providing services across almost a third of Wales.
Following a consultation process, the Council, which is widely recognised as an early adopter of new technologies, commissioned Esteem Systems, a Sun Microsystems Datacenter System Accredited Reseller, to supply the Sun hardware and software.
Andy Smith, Head of ICT at the Council, said: "Expertise from Esteem and Sun Microsystems will lay the foundation for our future web services and assist us in moving towards achieving e-Government. Powys Council prides itself on the service it provides to the local community and its commitment to new technology. This new system will enable us to develop and deploy web services and deliver improved service to the public whilst reducing the total cost of ownership."
Working with Sun Microsystems, Esteem Systems is providing technical advice on a customised Sun ONE architecture designed to meet the Council's specific requirements. Sun ONE provides a highly scalable and robust foundation for traditional software applications as well as current Web-based applications, while laying the foundation for next-generation distributed computing models such as Web services.
