Esteem Improves End User Services For University Of Salford
30th January 2006
Esteem Systems, one of the UK’s leading IT services providers, has been awarded a contract in excess of £390k by University of Salford to improve and update its existing IT infrastructure. The project will enhance functionality and accessibility for University staff and improve services for their user population.
Esteem will work in partnership with the University, utilising their in-house knowledge of campus layout and bespoke applications coupled with Esteem’s expertise and experience in delivering an integrated IT infrastructure, to provide a solution which will standardise the University’s computing environment with minimum impact to staff productivity and day to day operations.
Esteem will design and implement the new infrastructure, based on merging the University’s two existing domains in to a single Windows 2003 Active Directory service, at the same time deploying an email platform using Exchange 2003. Exchange will be in a clustered configuration to provide users with high service availability and a greater fault tolerance capacity with the added benefit of providing staff with secure remote access to email. A Veritas Enterprise Vault archiving solution will allow email data to be properly stored, managed and accessed during its entire lifecycle. Esteem will perform a structured migration of all existing users, computers and mailboxes from the existing platform to the new 2003 infrastructure, minimising disruption for staff.
The new computing infrastructure will address the University’s need to establish a strategically robust IT infrastructure which will move the organisation forward in terms of its approach to messaging, data and application delivery by providing a single, secure email system and web based and mobile access to email and calendar functions.
In addition to the end user benefits Salford are looking to achieve, the new solution will also improve the resilience and flexibility of IT services by providing simplified access, increased uptime via the implementation of a clustered solution and consistent functionality with the use of a “common desktop.”
The contract comes as a result of an ongoing relationship between Esteem Systems and the University of Salford which began in 2003 when Esteem worked closely with the university to implement the IT infrastructure for its Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
Martine Carassik, Head of Application Development and Control, commented: “Our primary aims for this project are to ensure we continue to be able to deliver our learning and teaching objectives through excellent service provision for our students. We are confident that Esteem will provide us with a solution which will enable us to continue to provide a high standard of education both in house and remotely with the support of an IT infrastructure which is secure, accessible and compliant.”
