NHS Scotland Lowers Carbon Footprint With £275,000 Investment From Esteem Systems
22 October 2007
NHS National Services Scotland is modernising its IT infrastructure with a £275,000 investment designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce physical space and lower the organisation’s carbon footprint in line with government targets.
The contract with Esteem Systems, one of the UK’s leading IT services providers, will also reduce operational costs and drive efficiency gains across the NHS in Scotland in order to improve services to citizens.
The investment will enable the existing IT infrastructure to be consolidated and virtualised using a range of technology including VMware software; Sun Microsystems servers and storage; a NetApp storage array and HP servers. The consolidated infrastructure will utilise smaller servers which require less physical space; are more energy efficient; and cooler meaning the organisation will also reduce the amount of air conditioning needed to run their systems.
The improvements to their IT infrastructure will also help NHS Scotland manage the vast amount of data it collects and processes through the use of Data Integrator software by Pervasive. This will allow the organisation to deliver key statistics vital to the running of the NHS.
Infrastructure and Business Systems Manager for NHS Scotland, Mike Brown says: “The Department of Health has mandatory targets to reduce its overall carbon emissions by 2010. The improvements made as a result of this investment will contribute towards this target by reducing the carbon footprint of NHS Scotland.”
“It will also improve the performance and reliability of our IT systems enabling us to work more efficiently, process information faster and improve services to the public.”
“We work strategically with Esteem and benefit greatly from their close relationships with key technology vendors such as Sun, VMware, NetApp and HP. Involving Esteem at an early stage in our discussions ensures we make informed decisions about the future of our IT infrastructure.”
