Esteem, the specialist managed services provider for IT infrastructures, has won a significant network project from Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. Working to upgrade an HP network for 6,000 devices. Esteem will design; implement and project manage this work which will be completed in March 2016 and awarded under an NHS North of England framework agreement.
The current network serves three main hospitals and other locations. With a brand new hospital, the Midland Metropolitan Hospital, opening in 2018 it currently does not offer sufficient bandwidth for future applications including digital dictation, new electronic patient record and administration systems, voice over IP and video conferencing.
"We needed a better underlying network infrastructure to support our vision for modern digital health informatics and to reduce the cost of ownership. We wanted to create an easily managed scalable high performance network and to leverage our existing HP equipment as much as possible," said Alison Dailly, Chief Informatics Officer, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. "Esteem understood our requirements better than anyone else and has made a good start. They are now helping us work with HP on completing the network design."
"Upgrading the existing HP network with new core and access switches offers Sandwell the most efficient solution for the least cost, disruption and risk," said Esteem CEO, Joe Connolly. "Sandwell has recognised Esteem's proven track record in delivering IT infrastructure solutions to the NHS."
The upgraded network is being designed, guaranteed and supported by HP who will also install the network core. Esteem is project managing all this work and will install the network edge. The trusts total upgrade investment comes to over £2m.
The design will use the HP FlexNetwork architecture including HP 5930 modular FlexFabric data centre switches in the core and HP FlexFabric 5700 switches at the edge. More HP 2920 switches will be added and existing HP 5400zl switches upgraded. The HP Intelligent Management Centre Enterprise Software Platform will be retained as it also supports quality of service (QoS) management.
The project was awarded to Esteem under the NHS North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative's IT infrastructure hardware and services framework agreement, Lot 3.
Other Esteem NHS customers include Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust and Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.
