Great Ormond Street Hospital is to virtualise the majority of its server infrastructure with a Citrix and Microsoft based solution from Esteem Systems. The world renowned children’s hospital will replace 150 physical servers in its server estate to just 15, saving resources, cutting costs and reducing power consumption thanks to the new infrastructure.
Esteem will design, implement and subsequently manage the new virtualised environment which will run across the entire hospital. Once in place, the solution will provide Great Ormond Street with a reliable system for its critical data, ensure effective disaster recovery and ultimately improve patient care. As well as virtualising the server environment, Esteem will also upgrade the hospital’s existing Citrix XenApp infrastructure which is used to deliver applications to 2500 desktops.
Jilani Gulam, Project Manager at Great Ormond Street Hospital, comments, “Esteem’s virtualisation knowledge, Citrix expertise and extensive experience of working with NHS organisations made them an ideal fit for the project and the ongoing management of the solution. The health industry is moving into a virtual world and we wanted to capitalise on the benefits that a virtualised environment offers. After completing comprehensive due diligence, a Citrix and Microsoft solution appeared to be the natural choice to fit with our operations.”
Alastair Kitching, Chief Operating Officer at Esteem Systems, adds, “The solution will enable Great Ormond Street Hospital to reduce operating costs such as power, cooling and management. These savings will ensure that the hospital’s funds can be directed to critical patient care and at the same time, improve the level of service that IT provides.”
